Reminder: Michael Jackson is dead. Whoa. I know, I know we're all over talking about it and hearing about it. I just can't help but feel strange still. To me its the like ultimate solidification of adulthood. A strong symbol of kidhood awesomeness is gone. 26 years on this polluted earth and MJ was there. No more moonwalks, no more "he-he's" or "sha-mon's." It's gonna feel weird for a while. In the meantime I will carry out his legacy through his music, as he would have wanted...and as all the 87 million media outlets are telling me too as well. I shall cease Michael talllllllllk, NOW!
I can't think of any other artist that had such immense popularity to draw as many famous people into his own music video as Michael did. Liberian Girl had EVERYONE in it. Such as:
-the dad from 227
-Bubbles the Chimp
-The cop from Terminator
-Malcom Jammal Warner
-That dude from LA Law
-and a bunch of other people....name them if you see others unlisted.
T.G.I.F. It's getting close to that time.
I find myself in real quandary today.
I want to tribute the obvious on this Friday. The talk of the entire fucking world...the loss of a significant player in my childhood development and musical history. Pop icon... color barrier warrior... dancing genius and the best selling artist in history. Period.
Michael Jackson died yesterday at 2.20pm in Los Angeles at the age of 50. Cut at him all you want.
He was surrounded by controversy. It was probably, definitely, true... If OJ did it then Michael did it too. It does say something about his character. It does not say something about his music and the utterly prolific effect its had on humans.
The point is....as the Reverand Al Sharpton said when he spoke following Michael's death...“Michael Jackson made culture accept a person of color, way before Tiger Woods, way before Oprah Winfrey, way before Barack Obama. Michael did with music what they later did in sports and in politics, and in television. And no controversy will erase the historic impact."
Thank you Reverend...well said.
I cannot help but be genuinely sad about the passing of a truly great artist...the first artist who's death I've actually had feelings about. I think this is quite the sad situation.
...and I always thought Elizabeth Taylor would die before Michael. Just another curve ball of 2009.
Rest in Peace Michael Jackson
